completely mesmerising, watch the wings spin when
placed in the light or sun. also known as a light mill
or solar engine, the solar radiometer was invented in
1873 by an english physicist. it demonstrates, with simple
physics and movement, how light can be transformed
into energy. when exposed to a warm light source, such
as the sun or a lamp, the black and polished vanes spin.
the black side of the vane absorbs the light faster than
the polished side, air pressure builds and raises the
temperature of the air molecules on the back side
of the vane causing the spinning motion.
the black used on the vanes can sometimes flake off.
these flakes are usually very small. this is not a defect,
but a result of the hand made nature of the product.
made in glass, beechwood and steel.
