st george was of greek origin, born in the 3rd century ad in cappadocia. he joined the roman army in emperor diocletian’s retinue and quickly rose up through the ranks becoming a courageous soldier. legend has it that he heroically slayed a dragon to rescue a princess, suggesting good overcoming evil, and there are many paintings and children’s tales which illustrate the story. he became a christian martyr when he was tortured and executed on 23 april 303ad for refusing to take part in the systematic persecution of christians under the diocletian regime.   even though he probably never set foot in this country,...
